DORMA ESA Automatic Sliding Door Initial Setup

The DORMA ESA Automatic Sliding Door System requires an initial learning cycle whenever the operator is first installed or when door stop locations are changed. This process allows the controller to establish door travel limits, measure inertia, and configure operating parameters.

Compatible with ESA Versions 2.00 and 2.10

Before You Begin

Before starting the setup procedure:

  • Ensure door carrier end stops (bumpers) are properly positioned.
  • Verify finger protection is correctly installed.
  • Make sure sliding door panels are completely glazed.
  • Confirm the Program Switch is set to Automatic.
  • Ensure Exit Only and Partial Open modes are turned off.

Important: If door stop locations are changed after the initial learn cycle, the controller must be relearned to recognize the new stroke position.

Initial Learn Cycle Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the Door

Open the sliding door panel(s) approximately 5 to 6 inches.

For Single Slide Doors:
P-SX, O-SX, and SX-SO configurations should remain closed during this procedure because they use reverse motor leads.

Step 2: Power the Controller

Plug power into the ESA controller.

Step 3: Activate Learn Mode

Press and hold the black service button located on the front of the controller until the door begins moving.

  • This typically takes about 25 seconds.
  • Release the button once the door starts moving.

Step 4: Allow the Self-Learn Cycle to Complete

The controller will automatically perform a learning sequence:

  1. Door closes completely.
  2. Door “jerks” open a short distance to measure inertia.
  3. Door slowly opens to full travel to establish stroke length.
  4. Door closes.
  5. Door slightly opens and closes three times to verify the closed position and confirm startup inertia values.
  6. The controller stores stroke measurements, inertia values, and factory default settings.

Do Not Interrupt This Process.

Once complete, the operator is fully programmed and ready for adjustment.

Adjusting Settings After Initial Setup

After the learn cycle has finished, operating parameters can be customized using the DORMA Hand Terminal.

Accessing the Main Menu

  1. Press the green ENTER key.
  2. The Main Menu will appear.

Selecting a Menu

  • Press the corresponding #1 key for the desired value or setting.
  • The active submenu number will be displayed in the upper-right corner of the screen.
  • Navigate forward through menus using the Right Arrow (→) key.
  • Navigate backward using the Left Arrow (←) key.

Warning: Exiting a menu using the Left Arrow key before saving may result in the loss of unsaved changes.

Best Practices

  • Always complete the initial learn cycle before making adjustments.
  • Verify all door hardware and glazing are installed before programming.
  • Do not move door stops after setup unless a new learn cycle is performed.
  • Allow the self-learning process to finish without interruption.
  • Use the DORMA Hand Terminal for fine-tuning operating parameters after setup.

Applications

The DORMA ESA automatic sliding door system is commonly used in:

  • Retail storefronts
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Airports and transportation hubs
  • Educational buildings
  • Government facilities
  • Commercial office entrances

The automatic learning feature simplifies commissioning while ensuring smooth, reliable door operation and accurate travel limits.
