Generic Auto Sliding Door Owner’s Manual

Owner Responsibility and Safety Compliance

  • Daily Inspections: Owners or caretakers must inspect the door system daily to ensure it is safe for use by employees and customers.

  • Professional Maintenance: Doors should be inspected at least annually by an AAADM-certified inspector to ensure compliance with ANSI/BHMA A156.10 standards.

  • Corrective Action: If a door fails a safety check or operates improperly, discontinue use immediately and contact an AAADM-certified service technician for repairs.

  • Safety Training: Owners should be instructed by their supplier on how to conduct daily safety checks and understand the location and use of function switches.

Daily Safety Checklist

Perform these checks while traffic is restricted from all detection and sensing zones.

Sensor and Threshold Safety

  • Activation: Doors should begin opening when a person is roughly four feet away and should slide smoothly without impact.

  • Threshold Safety: Standing motionless in the door travel area for at least 10 seconds should prevent the door from closing.

  • Closing Speed: Doors must slide closed smoothly after a brief time delay (at least 1.5 seconds) and should not exceed a speed of one foot per second.

Floor Mat Activation (If Equipped)

  • Opening Mat: Stepping on the “opening” mat should cause the door to slide open smoothly.

  • Safety Mat: The door must remain fully open while a person is on the mat on either side of the doorway.

  • Hardware: Ensure mat molding and thresholds are complete and secured with all required screws.

Emergency Breakout and Knowing Act Switches

  • Emergency Exit: Pushing the door at the lock area in the direction of emergency exit should cause the door to stop operation or return to a closed position.

  • Breakaway Sidelites: If equipped, door operation should stop when sidelites are broken out.

  • Activating Switches: Doors with manual switches should remain open for at least five seconds after the switch is released.

General Maintenance and Housekeeping

  • Required Signage: Decals such as “AUTOMATIC DOOR,” “IN EMERGENCY – PUSH TO OPEN,” and “STAND CLEAR” must be clearly visible and legible.

  • Clear Area: The door path should be free of debris, tripping hazards, and distractions like merchandise displays that may cause people to stop in the door area.

  • Traffic Routing: Plan traffic patterns so users approach the door straight on rather than at an angle.

Minimum Closing Time Requirements

To remain in compliance, the time it takes for a door to close from full open to within six inches of fully closed must meet the following minimums:
